Dallas Cowboys’ icon George Andrie passes away at the age of 78

George Andrie, the Dallas Cowboys defensive end and iconic member of the Doomsday Defense has died on Tuesday at his Waco home at 78, as per reports by several media outlets. Ex-Cowboys executive, Gil Brandt first released the report of his death. He said that he is extremely sad to hear the news of the ‘passing away of legend George Andrie, whom he had drafted in the year 1962.

“I would say he was from Marquette, but MU dropped football after 1960 season. George was one of my greatest finds. Turned into all-pro DE for Cowboys. Leaves behind wife Mary Lou and seven children,” Brandt said.

Andrie, who was raised in Grand Rapids in Michigan, played football in his school days in a program at Marquette. When the program ended, Andrie was a junior. He continued to study until his final year as a regular student. The Cowboys drafted him in the 6th round of the NFL Draft of 1962. Andrie was one of the first great finds of Brandt and made major contributions to the team just after he joined in the third season.

Andrie was a four-time All-Pro winner and five-time Pro Bowler. He has shared the defensive end with Bob Lilly, who is argued to be as one of the greatest Cowboy players of all time.

Andrie will be remembered as one of the greatest players of Cowboys football. He always saved his best of performances for moments when he needed them the most. He has scored the first touchdown of the Cowboys of the Ice Bowl in the year 1967 against the team Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys won the Super Bowl VI due to Andrie. He opted for retirement a year after the NFC Championship and was remembered as a beloved team legend.
